Brief description

The Pollution in the North Atlantic Flight Corridor (POLINAT) campaigns were based from Shannon airport, Ireland. Flights were performed using the DLR Falcon aircraft as measurement platform. The Swissair B-747 measurements (NOXAR 2) were part of POLINAT 2. These measurements are described under NOXAR.

This page is still under construction.

POLINAT-1: Special remarks concerning ETHmeg database content

Data downloaded from FTP-server at DLR. An overview of the available files is given in STATUS.TXT.

The filename convention used for the raw files is TTYYMMDD.xxx, where TT is the file type and xxx is the Falcon-specific suffix fa1 or fb1.
The following file types TT and contents were processed for POLINAT-1:

  • fb: Flight parameters
  • up: O3
  • DH: water vapor mixing ratio R H2O (ppm), dew/frost-point Temperature dewpT (C), RH_water, RH_ice
  • cl: NO and NOc
  • H3: HNO3
  • AC: Acetone

Some relative humidities on flight 970701 were zero and the corresponding frost-point temperatures were unreasonably high. These values were eliminated. The flights from 30 June, 3 July and 5 July were excluded because they were aircraft-plume chasing flights.

POLINAT-2: Special remarks concerning ETHmeg database content

Data downloaded from FTP-server at NASA (same as that for SONEX).

An overview of the DLR Falcon flights during POLINAT-2 and the availability of data is presented in the file faltable.txt.
A complete list of the file types in the POLINAT-2 database can be found in file datatable.txt.
We only used the following files with the following contents (other files contain CO2, SO2 and particle data).

  •
  • AC.FAL:  Arnold  MPI_acetone_measurements

  • CL.FAL:  Schlager  DLR_NO,NOx and NOy mixing_ratio (files not always all 3 components)

  • CR.FAL:  Slemr  IFU CO,J(NO2) (files sometimes only with CO and sometimes only with JNO2)

  • DH.FAL:  Ovarlez  H2Ov_from_frost_pt_hygrometer

  • FB.FAL:  Schlager  Falcon_met_and_nav_data(Flugbetrieb): flight and meteo parameters

  • HN.FAL:  Arnold  MR-MS_HNO3_mixing_ratio

  • PV.FAL:  Velthoven ECMWF_Pot.Vort._along_Falcon_flt.track

  • UP.FAL:  Schlager  DLR_O3_from_UV_photometer

The following minor problems were encountered during data processing:

File CR19971014__L2.FAL contained very high CO values (several 1000 ppb) between 60609 and 60827 UTC. These values were eliminated.
