Official ACE-1 homepage

Brief description

ACE-1 was conducted over the Southwest Pacific Ocean, South of Australia and involved the joint efforts of the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry Project's (IGAC) Aerosol Characterization and Process Studies (ACAPS) Activity and Marine Aerosol and Gas Exchange (MAGE) Activity. Observations were made from the NCAR C-130, the NOAA research vessel Discoverer, the Australian Fisheries research vessel Southern Surveyor, and at Cape Grim, Macquarie Island, and Baring Head NZ. Only NCAR C-130 observations are included in the database.

Overview of C-130 flights

  • Table
  • Flight map
  • Figure of flight profiles and latitudes
  • Special remarks concerning ETHmeg database content

The following file types were downloaded and processed for the database:

  • COCAL (ppbv): calibrated CO
  • H2O2 (ppbv): gas-phase H2O2. Other peroxides also available.
  • TEO3C (ppbv): standard UV O3.
  • O3FC (ppbv):  fast response CLD O3.
Only O3FC (NO-chemiluminescence) data were used. Data quality is poor for flights 1-10.
  • Flight parameters:
XLATC, XLONC (deg): GPS corrected latitude and longitude
    ATX (degC): Ambient temperature.
    DPXC (degC): Dew/frost point temperature.
EDPC (hPa): H2O partial pressure, thus EDPC/PSXC = H2O Volume Mixing Ratio (depends on DPXC)
MR (g/kg): H2O mixing ratio (depends on DPXC)
    PALT (m): Pressure Altitude
    PSXC (hPa): Static  pressure
  • H2SO4 (ppbv) and sometimes OH (molec/cm**3) and MSA
  • CFCs and Hydrocarbons
  • NO and NO_std (ppbv). NO and NO standard error.
  • Special observation periods which should probably be excluded in the analysis are:

  • Volcano plume flights on F04, 5 Nov 1995 2135-2200 UTC and F05, 7 Nov 1995 0000-0030 UTC
  • Bad O3 data on flights 1-10.
